This Guy Quit Alcohol and Coffee for 15 Months and Here’s What Happened

Have you ever thought of quitting alcohol and coffee to see what happens? If you haven’t, here is some food for your thought.

Alcohol and coffee are two substances that many people consume regularly. They can both be addictive and extremely costly, not to mention the long-term impact on your health, and yet we all accept them as a part of our social norms.
Tobias, the co-founder of Semplicedecided to give up the two substances for 15 months to see the real effects they were having not only on his health but also on his relationships, bank balance and state of mind. Tobias found that he learned a number of things, and many things about his life shifted and improved. So far, he has never looked back.

Here are just some of the things that happened when he quit alcohol and coffee for the 15 months:

He saved $1,000 a month

Tobias lived in New York and when he was drinking he was spending around $1,000 on alcohol each month. Like any major city, drinking is a part of the culture and is an extremely expensive habit. If you work it out, that’s 2-3 cocktails every other day and a couple of bottles of wine each month. Not only this, but by going out drinking regularly you inevitably spend more money on eating – drinking leads to extra food costs, and that can easily add up to $1,000.

Less gossiping

Most social events involve drinking, so Tobias found that he would have to say no to people and therefore didn’t see them. Being the one sober person going out with a group of people who are drinking can be very testing. He found that without alcohol it was almost impossible to listen to the rambling gossip from his friends. It also highlighted the idea that drinking culture is so engrained in our friendships, you almost can’t see friends without having a drink.

His sleep quality increased

We all know it – if you try to sleep after even a few glasses of wine or beer, you can fall asleep easily, but your quality of sleep is bad. After Tobias quit alcohol, he slept better and woke up feeling more awake. The effect of even just a few drinks on your sleep quality is great, particularly if you are over that 30 bracket (young 20-year-olds do not need to worry!).

No coffee, less anxiety and stress

Coffee is another social norm that people stick by. But “going for coffee” doesn’t have to mean drinking coffee. Tobias found that coffee caused his anxiety levels to increase, messed with his digestion, and made him stressed. Keep the social habit of going for coffee, but replace it with decaf or herbal tea instead!
After his 15-month experiment, Tobias has no desire to pick up a drink again. He feels healthier and his relationships are more solid.
You can do it too. Start today, quit alcohol and coffee and learn from Tobias’ experiences, make a change and start feeling the effects almost immediately.
